Sea for Yourself - Artist Residency

I propose a residency that explores Plymouth Sound’s marine and cultural heritage through the lens of collaborative songwriting - engaging a community cohort of 8–12 young women and gender-diverse people (aged 18–25) from rural or economically deprived areas in Devon and Cornwall. Together, we’ll uncover and retell community stories through a participatory music project that amplifies unheard voices and connects personal identity with the shared history of the sea.

1. Showcasing the work of CHORUS Songwriting Retreat - building collaboration, connection and confidence in young women and gender diverse individuals.

2. An example of a live performance video filmed on a CHORUS Songwriting Retreat - this is an arrangement created by participant Marta Antunes of a Lorde track, titled ‘Fallen Fruit’.

3. Example of my work as a folk singer/songwriter, performing one of my original songs ‘In Your Head’ which features a traditional Irish tune ‘Dunmore Lasses’, from a project exploring the use of traditional tunes in contemporary folk.

This is the introduction video diary to my Churchill Fellowship research project exploring Songwriting Retreats in the USA.

Video diaries from the rest of the project can be found here:

Testimonials from participants of previous projects:

‘‘Sharing the space for 3 days with a great group of women, having structure to the days but also a good bit of free time for chilling and changing. Wonderful, absolutely living the dream!’’
- Josie, 2024

‘‘Honestly it was life changing, even just been at one with nature, no distractions, no phones or the outside world, just a beautiful welcoming group of people all loving music just as much as everyone else! It was magical.’’
- Izzie, 2023
